UIA changed the rules for hand baggage, now you will have to pay extra for a laptop

Starting January 15, new hand baggage allowances have entered into force for all UIA flights. For the first time, the carrier announced the changes in advance, in October 2018. New rules apply to passengers who bought tickets after November 1, 2018 with a departure date of January 15, 2019.

How it was

Previously, UIA allowed to carry items up to 5 kg free of charge on board. A ladies’ or men’s bag, a camera or binoculars, a laptop or newspaper for reading, a shopping bag from Duty Free stores were included among them.

What have changed

Now all these items must be packed in the hand luggage of the appropriate dimensions. If you don’t take care of it, these items will be considered additional baggage, which you will have to pay for at the airport.

Extra space for hand luggage weighing up to 5 kg will cost 15 euros. Its maximum dimensions are 40 x 30 x 10 centimeters. It is assumed that luggage can be marked out in front of the passenger seat, so only one “slot” can be purchased for each passenger.

A complete list of new rules for carry-on baggage looks like this:

  • Passengers who have purchased tickets that do not include baggage allowance will be able to take 1 piece of hand baggage weighing up to 7 kg and no more than 55 x 40 x 20 cm, as well as outerwear and an umbrella, on board the aircraft.
  • Passengers who purchased tickets that include baggage transportation and premium economy class passengers can take 2 pieces of hand luggage with them: 1 piece weighing up to 7 kg and not larger than 55 x 40 x 20 cm and 1 piece weighing up to 5 kg and not dimensions more than 40 x 30 x 10 cm, as well as outerwear and an umbrella.
  • Business class passengers will be able to carry 2 pieces of hand luggage: 1 piece up to 12 kg and no larger than 55 x 40 x 20 cm and 1 piece up to 5 kg and no more than 40 × 30 × 10 cm, as well as outerwear and umbrella.
  • Passengers of business class long-haul flights will be able to carry 3 pieces of hand baggage: 2 pieces with a total weight of up to 15 kg and no more than 55 x 40 x 20 cm each and 1 piece weighing up to 5 kg and no more than 40 × 30 × 10 cm, and also outerwear and umbrella.

New standards do not apply to people with disabilities. They are allowed to carry a cane, a pair of crutches or walkers, as well as additional auxiliary equipment for free.
